What Is Yacón Syrup?Yacon root

Raw Yacon Syrup is a sweet syrup refined from the root of the Yacon plant (Smallanthus sonchifolius) which grows in the highlands of South America. Also referred to as the Peruvian Ground Apple, the root and leaves of the Yacon plant have been used for centuries in Peru for a variety of culinary and medicinal uses, from a basic sweetener to treating digestive disorders and even diabetes.

The Yacon plant itself is of the Tuber variety, meaning that its plant structure is one which is enlarged, such as a potato for example, in order to store liquids and nutrients for the next growing season. It is actually a close relative to the sunflower plant and its flowers resemble sunflowers as well. During long journeys, Incas would depend on digging up and eating the Yacon roots primarily for their liquid content, but for nourishment as well.

What can Yacon root syrup do for me?

Yacon SyrupYacon Syrup is very sweet, like honey, but with a delightfully different taste and half the calories. The main difference between Yacon Syrup and other syrups such as honey, maple syrup and others is in the types of sugars it contains.

The sugars that Yacon Syrup is high in are called fructans, which are molecules of fructose that are built in chains. Yacon Syrup is rich in both long-chain fructans such as inulin as well as short-chain fructans such as fructooligosaccharides (FOS for short). Yacon Syrup typically contains between 30% to 50% FOS, though these levels are subject to the crop from which it is produced, which is in turn subject to growing conditions of the season. Thus, FOS levels can vary from season to season even for yacon syrup produced from yacon root from the same farm. However, an independent lab test of our Yacon Syrup Gold revealed an extremely high FOS content of 67.81%.

Though these natural FOS sugars taste deliciously sweet when we eat them, they cannot be digested easily in the stomach. Instead, they pass through un-metabolized into the intestines and colon where they provide food for and promote the growth of the natural, friendly bacteria that reside there.

The result is a great tasting, low calorie, high fiber food which improves digestion, stimulates bowel cleansing, improves your immune system and can help you ward off disorders such as digestive allergies and candidiasis. Nearly 2,500 years ago Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine believed that “All disease begins in the gut”. And modern medical science is finding more and more evidence that intestinal health plays a key role in one’s immune function and overall health. By consuming Yacon Syrup or adding it to your candida-cure recipes, candida albicans can more easily be starved off while allowing you to still enjoy the taste of sweetness.

Studies have also shown that Yacon Syrup is a powerful appetite suppressant and reduces levels of the hunger hormone ghrelin in your body. Taking only one teaspoon before meals has been shown to help control appetite and food cravings, boost metabolism and promote significant weight loss. That’s a lot of health benefits!

  • Improves digestion,
  • Stimulates bowel cleansing,
  • Improves immune strength,
  • Prevents digestive allergies,
  • Promotes healthy intestinal flora,
  • Suppresses appetite,
  • Reduces sugar cravings,
  • Boosts metabolism,
  • Supports natural weight loss

And finally, Yacon Syrup glycemic index is nearly zero, making it safe for use by diabetics. It also appears to naturally regulate blood sugar and insulin levels while also supporting healthy cholesterol levels. It’s a perfect compliment to a diet plan either without or without supplements such as Garcinia Cambogia and Saffron Extract, and we expect to see many more Yacon Syrup benefits as more studies are conducted.

How Do I Know It Works?

yacon benefitsMany people have successfully used Yacon Syrup for weight loss because of its ability to increase metabolism and regulate blood sugar levels, as well as for its value as a replacement for sugar, which can be converted to fat by the liver.

A particular 2009 study by Susana Genta and published in Clinical Nutrition followed 55 obese Argentine women who took 3 to 4 teaspoons of Yacon Syrup per day over the course of four months. The results showed a 33 pound average weight loss in four months, or roughly two pounds per week. They also lost an average of 4 inches in waist circumference and experienced improved insulin levels and a significant drop in bad cholesterol.

The only real way to know if Yacon Syrup will work for you is to try it. But in a recent study performed by television health care talk show host Dr. Oz* asked 60 women to eat one teaspoon of Yacon Syrup with each meal three times a day for four weeks. The results were amazing: 73% of the women lost weight, 14 women lost five pounds or more, average weight loss was 2.9 pounds, average reduction in waist size was 1.9 inches, and 68% recommended yacon as a weight loss tool.

Is Yacon Syrup Safe?

Yacon Syrup has been widely used and is considered to be safe and virtually free of side effects when taken in small amounts. Also, studies conducted on laboratory rats which were given several orders of magnitude more than the recommended human dosage revealed no toxicity effects. However, since it does promote bowel cleansing, and is effective at relieving and preventing constipation, consuming larger amounts of Yacon Syrup could lead to diarrhea, bloating, flatulence and in some cases nausea. Also, since it is a relative to the sunflower, those with allergies to sunflower seeds may also have a reaction to Yacon Syrup.

Yacon Root SyrupWhat Yacon Syrup Dosage Should I Take?

For intestinal health, appetite control and weight loss, the recommended dosage of Yacon Syrup is 1 teaspoon three times daily before meals. Generally, you’ll want to limit your daily consumption to no more than 1 to 2 tablespoons. You can also add it to your coffee or tea, and it’s a perfect addition to smoothies. You can also safely bake with Yacon Syrup, using it as a substitute for honey, corn syrup, sugar or brown sugar. Though heating Yacon Syrup to temperatures above 70˚C (158˚F) can reduce its beneficial properties, it will still maintain it’s sweetness characteristics while providing low calories and high fiber.
